Police have raided the home of an Australian tech entrepreneur identified by two US publications as one of the early developers of the digital currency bitcoin.

On Wednesday afternoon, police gained entry to a home belonging to Craig Wright, who had hours earlier been identified in investigations by Gizmodo and Wired, based on leaked transcripts of legal interviews and files. Both publications have indicated that they believe Wright to have been involved in the creation of the cryptocurrency.

Cyber Monday sales on track to top $3bn for the first time ever

Website outages and slow checkouts at websites including Target do little to dampen holiday spirit of online shoppers, who had spent $490m by 10am ET

Cyber Monday isn’t over yet but it already looks poised to set a record this year, with early indications that online sales have grown 14% and leading retail websites including Target crashing temporarily, seemingly overwhelmed by high customer traffic.

Sales are expected to reach a record $3bn for the first time ever, a 50% increase from $2bn in sales reached on Cyber Monday three years ago.

China's Alibaba records 'singles day' sales of $8bn in 10 hours

E-commerce company set for record sales in what has become the world’s biggest online retail promotion

Shoppers spent nearly $8bn in the first 10 hours of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba’s “singles day” event on Wednesday, the company said, reinforcing its status as the world’s biggest online retail promotion.

Total gross merchandise volume, a measure of sales, reached 50bn yuan ($7.86bn) at 9.52am, it said on its website, after the promotion began at midnight.
